I was interviewed by CarbonBrief regarding China’s mangrove restoration. I regard China’s special action plan on mangrove restoration as a tremendous success, leading it to be one of the few countries that have had a net increase in mangrove coverage in the past decades. The plan set a hard KPI for restoration, in addition to new planting, so that local authorities had to face real problems. However, challenges remain. More investment is needed; mangroves should form ecosystems beyond areas; and pollution near mangroves should also be managed.
Appreciate Anika for the editing.
